About Me

Hi! my name is Cate Weiser, I'm a senior in high school, and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I've been passionate about writing ever since I wrote my first story about a salamander eating Petal the flower's petals in 2008 on my mom's ancient Microsoft computer. That love developed into many attempts at novels through elementary school, a couple of short fiction contests in middle school, and three years on staff of The Communicator, our journalism publication, in high school.

I started out as a staff writer sophomore year, and immediately fell in love with interviewing. It satiated my curiosity about others, and the writing process helped me explore their stories even more. After only a month in class, I was spending hours in our production space in the afternoons. By junior year, I had become one of the first three Editor-in-Chiefs of social media. Our advisor wanted us to transform our social media platforms into a third publication, alongside our print magazine and website. Now in my third year on staff, I am a senior member of the social media Editor-in-Chief team.

When I'm not in our production room, I'm out developing my photography skills. In addition to stories about salamanders, young me would often try and grab my grandmother's many Nikon and Canon cameras. While I was never allowed to shoot with them, I loved watching her. She gave me my first camera, a Canon EOS M5, as an eighth grade graduation present. I shot an abundance of portraits of my friends, pets and travels; the local division of the national climate strike in 2019; and the editorial shots for my first article.

Now, with my Canon EOS 7D, I work as a freelance photographer and capture collections of senior portraits. I took up film photography after a class at school, and practice photojournalism for The Communicator's social media, website and magazine. My experience in photojournalism is utilized throughout the publication, making every piece my photos accompany stronger.

A photo of me giving a presentation on photography. It was the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, and it was one of the first things taught to new staff members. We wanted to emphasize the importance of strong photos for all three of our publications.
